Essential Elements

of Wellscapes
Data sharing agreements are established with the school(s) to link demographic data (e.g., gender, race, ethnicity, etc.) with physical activity data in order to better understand how physical activity opportunities impact the youth population in your community.

Community Hub Network
The goal of Wellscapes is to improve physical activity in children; ultimately changing the way the community addresses youth health and wellness issues. To accomplish this, local individuals can come together and create a Community Hub. The Community Hub represents people from various organizations and settings working together toaccomplish a common goal. The Community Hub will use data collected from different youth groups (e.g. school, after school programs, clubs, and youth sport) to collaborate with one another and design ways to provide more group opportunities for youth and potentially improve the overall health of children in their community. Community members and organizations are guided through a rapid-improvement cycle: Investigate --> Design --> Practice --> Reflect, to determine ways to improve their community's wellness landscape.

Community Improvement Process
The Community Hub Network will be guided through a Community Improvement Process workshops. This process is described below:
INVESTIGATE: What is our Community Wellness Landscape?

Members will determine current group opportunities practices, examine strengths for building new opportunities, and determine decision makers who can help develop current and new community group opportunities for youth.
DESIGN: What community opportunities do we want to design for children and families? The Community Hub will build on the current local strengths and use these strengths to develop current and innovative new group opportunities for children and families.

PRACTICE: How do we try to practice implementing our design? Members will create a roadmap for developing a community wellness landscape, determine strategic resources, roles and responsibilities, and practice immediate community change.
REFLECT: Did we develop our community's wellness landscape? The Community Hub will reflect on the practice efforts and refine the community roadmap.

Training & Professional Development
Wellscapes offers the following materials and resources for professional development: workshops and youth leader physical activity training. WORKSHOPS: These are offered to communities to guide them through the Investigate --> Design --> Practice --> Reflect process. Using community data, the community hub will make decisions about youth physical activity and determine ways to improve the community landscape by creating more group opportunities for youth to be active.
COMMUNITY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY LEADER TRAINING: A 30-minute online training is available for teachers, coaches, club leaders, after school leaders, through the Investigate --> Design --> Practice --> Reflect process to learn how to insert physical activity into the routine they lead. Doing so helps them better organize their group of kids they lead and can impact children's lives by creating an environment that promotes physical activity and health. By providing community leaders with tools to improve physical activity in the places children go, it will help foster the creation of a landscape of healthy places within the community.
